International Forestry Students’ Symposium

What is IFSS?

The International Forestry Students’ Symposium (IFSS) is the biggest annual IFSA meeting. It’s a platform with an atmosphere of solidarity and inspiration, that enables the students to participate in various forestry activities, exchange information and share their experiences.

In a nutshell, the IFSS is a 16-days event with 130 forestry students participating. Coordination is being done by the Organizing Committee run by volunteers.

The Tour

The programme will include field trips, lectures and workshops to learn about topics such as the structure of German forestry, history and traditional use, different forest types, dynamics of climate change, as well as mitigation and adaptation strategies. In order to realise this diverse programme we will have a roundtrip over the course of two weeks, covering various parts of Germany.

International Forestry Students’ Association

What is IFSA?

The International Forestry Students’ Association is one of the largest international networks of students in forestry and related sciences. IFSA is a globally organized and locally operating students’ organisation connecting forest and related science students to their peers and forest related organisations and policy platforms.

With more than 130 member associations also known as Local Committees (LC), spread across over 50 countries, IFSA unites thousands of students in their endeavour to learn about forests, cultures and the environment. IFSA is a non-political, non-profit and non-religious organisation that is entirely run by students.

Originating from the Royal Prussian Forestry Academy in Münden founded in 1868, the former university has been affiliated as its own faculty with the University of Göttingen in 1939. The Faculty of Forest Science and Ecology is one of 13 faculties of the Göttingen University and offers 3 bachelor degrees in “B.Sc. Forest Science and Ecology”, “B.Sc. Ecosystem Science” and “B.Sc. Originating from the Royal Prussian Forestry Academy in Münden founded in 1868, the former university has been affiliated as its own faculty with the University of Göttingen in 1939. The 

The Forest Stewardship Council provides certification standards for forest management and wood processing chains in order to ensure a sustainable usage of forest ecosystems. The FSC Standards differ country-wise and are established in consideration of local interests from different economical, ecological and social stakeholders. The implementation of the standards in wood producing and processing companies is then examined by independent certifiers. In Germany, 1.44 million hectares of forests are certified by FSC Germany.

The Faculty of Forest and Environment is one of four faculties of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. It offers the classical program of “B.Sc. Forestry” but also unique bachelor programs like “B.Sc. International Forest Ecosystem Management” and masters in “M.Sc. Forest Information Technology”,  “M.Sc. Global Change Management” and “M.Sc. Forest System Transformation”. Originally founded as “Academy of Forestry”, the university educates upcoming foresters since 1830.
