SUMMARY:Webinar - Forestry and Agriculture - Better Together?
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we want to discuss Agroforestry as a tool for Sustainable Development\, Food Security\, and Ecological Restoration/Preservation. \nTherefore we have invited Joana Amaral Paulo from ISA/CEF and EURAF who will discuss modern and traditional agroforestry systems and practices in view of agroforestry systems as a means of reducing rural poverty and avoiding rural exodus as well diversity of the outputs of production as a way of economics and food security. \nSecond speaker\, Meine van Noordwijk from IUFRO will discuss the integration of trees on agricultural land and pasture (agroforest and silvopasture) and talk about the potential of agroforestry on the restoration of degraded landscapes and as a provider of ecosystem services. \nFurthermore\, Thuan Sarzynski (Supagro Montpellier and Youth in Landscapes Initiave) and Laura Deal (TRANS SUSTAIN) will join the webinar and join the speakers on discussing this thematic.

SUMMARY:International Day of Biodiversity: our solutions are in Nature - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Since its creation\, in 1993\, the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) aims to raise awareness for the importance of Biological Diversity\, who doesn’t only cover plant and animal species diversity but also genetic differences within the species as well as the ecosystems that host this species and their complex interactions. \nThis year’s theme is Our Solutions are in Nature\, which can be understood in two senses\, the first one being that we should follow nature’s example of exploiting a resource without threatening it’s sustainability. The second one is that we should take nature’s example of establishing complex interactions within various levels\, emphasizing the need for solidarity and cooperation. \nIn this webinar\, Luísa Falcão\, from GYBN Brazil\, and Diego Alonso Portugal del Pino\, from the IUCN CEM\, will discuss the role of youth leaders\, the scientific community and of those influencing public policies on the battle for a diverse and sustainable future. \nThe event will be live-streamed on the IFSA Facebook page. \nFollow the Facebook event of the IFSA IDB webinar for updates.

SUMMARY:Forest Policy Literacy Series
DESCRIPTION:Forests and the European Commission: Introduction into FLEGT-VPA and ‘Embodied’ Deforestation\nSpeaker: Argyro Zerva; European Commission; Directorate General for Environment; Multilateral Environmental Cooperation\nThe European Commission (EC) continues to develop various instruments that aim to reduce the European Unions (EU) international impact on forest degradation and destruction. In this webinar we want to improve our understanding of two particularly promising instruments and developments. First of all\, we will receive an input on a legally binding trade agreement\, called Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA)\, which allows Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) licenses to be issued. VPA-FLEGT aims to ensure the provision of legally sourced wood from timber-producing countries outside the EU. Why is this specific system believed to deliver positive results? What are the current developments? Can we already see results in countries where VPA-FLEGT is established? \nSecondly\, we focus on the legislative possibilities and current developments within the EU to reduce ‘embodied’ deforestation. This form of deforestation entails the impact of European market demands of products that drive deforestation abroad such as meat\, soy\, cacao or coffee. How can the European Community policies\, legislative measures or other initiatives tackle this problem? Following our deep dive\, we will ask our viewers to engage in a discussion with our expert through a moderated Q&A session. \nRegister for webinar \nBackground information \nVPA-FLEGT \n\nhttp://www.euflegt.efi.int/vpa\nResults Cameroon\, Ghana and Indonesia: http://www.cifor.org/publications/pdf_files/Reports/FLEGT-VPA-Report.pdf\n\nEmbodied Deforestation \n\nhttps://ec.europa.eu/environment/forests/impact_deforestation.htm\nhttps://ec.europa.eu/environment/forests/pdf/feasibility_study_deforestation_kh0418199enn_main_report.pdf\n\nled by:
