SUMMARY:CIFOR-ICRAF Digital Forum: Can tree planting save our planet?
DESCRIPTION:Tree planting has become the latest trend in helping to tackle the climate crisis. Business and political leaders like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have pledged to plant billions – even trillions – of trees across the planet as a fix for carbon emissions and degraded landscapes. \nOn September 29\, CIFOR-ICRAF in collaboration with the Global Landscapes Forum\, will host a half-day digital forum that will bring scientists\, forestry experts\, practitioners\, community groups and leaders\, investors\, entrepreneurs and policymakers together to share insights and scientific evidence to important tree planting initiatives. \nBy connecting tree planting to efforts on biodiversity and landscape restoration\, sustainable economic development and dismantling inequality\, the forum aims to highlight the need to get tree planting right. \nThe event is free of cost and everyone can attend. Youth is very welcome to join us online. Don’t forget to register! \n  \nFor more info contact Annebel Soer  (a.soer@cgiar.org)

SUMMARY:Nigerian Forestry Students and graduates Roundtable session #3
DESCRIPTION:Learning is beyond geographical location and forestry students do have an opportunity to study abroad in order to get quality education\, experience culture and work in a new environment and international exposure. One of the easiest ways to do this is through a scholarship abroad route. \n“Scholarship programme for MSc and Phd students from developing countries. A forestry and natural resources targeted scholarship programme can be established under UNESCO or World Bank Scholarships Program.” was one of the recommendations by Monica Gabay and Mika Rekola (2019) in a background study prepared for the fourteenth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests [See here – https://ifsa.net/forest-education-needed-in-all-schools/] \nAs the scholarship application season draws close for the year 2021\, many forestry students and graduates in Nigeria and beyond are not aware of scholarships opportunities they can tap into. Others need to be fully aware of the requirements for scholarship applications while some are not informed about the process and the need to apply. \nThis topic is inline with the goal 3 – “Enable students to engage globally”of International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA) 2018-2022 Strategy; IFSA overall vision of “a world that appreciates forests” and the objective of capacity building by the organiser of the Nigerian Forestry Students and Graduates round table session. \n  \nThe speakers are well experienced and are beneficiaries of one or more scholarships in the field of forestry\, they have also attended international forestry conferences among others and they are ready to share personal insights during this Webinar. \n  \nMeet our guests and learn more about them \n\nDr. Yemi Adeyeye\, YPARD Director and Erasmus Mundus Alumnus https://www.linkedin.com/in/yemi-adeyeye-53b36623\n\n\nMr. Bola Tomiyosi\, MasterCard Foundation Scholar\n\nhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/tomiyosi-bola-5ba079137 \n  \n\nMr. Fisola Adesuyi\, Erasmus Mundus Scholar https://www.linkedin.com/in/adesuyi-fisola-b4199714\n\n\nMr. Saliu Ibrahim\, Integration Analyst at Euroclear SA/NV and Erasmus Mundus Alumnus https://www.linkedin.com/in/ibrahim-sunkanmi-saliu-67bb7a17a\n\n  \nWebinar focus \n\nSearching for scholarships and noting their dates/ types of scholarships\nGeneral applications\, overview and general insights\nPreparing and collecting documents such as curriculum vitae or resume\, academic transcript\, English language proficiency certificate.\nEssay writing such as personal statement\, motivation letter\, leadership essay\, development essay\, financial situation essay etc.\nRelevant e-books will be shared also.\n\n  \nHosts: Meshach Aderele and Olaoluwa Adetula \nDate: Saturday\, 15th August\, 2020 \nTime: 1:00pm WAT \nRegistration: If you are joining the roundtable session for the first time\, please register through  http://bit.ly/maxrelevance to get the Zoom invite link.

SUMMARY:Nigeria Forestry Students and Graduates Roundtable Session
DESCRIPTION:More than a decade ago\, a forestry student from Nigeria decided to email the IFSA secretariat in Germany. He wanted to find out how his University (Federal University of Technology Akure\, Nigeria) can become a member of the International Forestry Students Association (IFSA). This singular act of courage and good spirit brought IFSA to Nigeria and one of the foremost countries to join from Africa[1]. \nHe did not stop only at his University becoming a member of IFSA\, but  was instrumental in the organisation of the first Northern Africa Regional Meeting in April 2009 in Nigeria. He faithfully and dutifully served IFSA in the following capacities. \n\nThe Sub-region Western Africa Representative in 2008 – 2009;\nLiaison Officer to CFA (Commonwealth Forestry Association) in 2009 – 2010; and\nHead of Sub-Commission UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) in 2010 – 2011.\n\nThe man is none other than  Dr. Julius Adewopo\, a Postdoctoral Fellow and Geospatial Analyst at International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA). \nLeaders are born and leaders are made\, he did not stop serving students in 2011. A ready example is Samuel Oluwafemi Ayanleye\, a Masters of Wood Science candidate and a MasterCard Foundation Scholar at University of British Columbia (UBC Canada). He attested that Dr. Julius Adewopo was one of the individuals that provided the much needed mentorship when he so perturbed about getting admission to study a “strange course of study’’ – Forestry back in 2012[2]. \nDr. Julius Adewopo is very concerned about the future of the Forestry profession in Nigeria and the world at large as well as the organizer of the Nigeria Forestry Students and Graduates Roundtable Session – Meshach Aderele and Olaoluwa Israel Adetula. He has agreed to speak to Forestry Students in Nigeria once more via Zoom by this weekend on Saturday 6 June 2020 by 1pm GMT+1. \nAlex Bimbo Onatunji\, Coordinator\, IUFRO-IFSA Joint Taskforce on Forest Education and the lead researcher in the Young Africa Forestry Professionals Publication Project[3] would also be making a presentation about the project too. The support offered by IFSA is really appreciated. \nI guess you don’t want to miss the scholarship offers available just for attending the programme too. Kindly indicate your interest to attend via this form – http://bit.ly/maxrelevance and join the train. Students from other countries are also welcome to attend the meeting. \n \nAlex Bimbo Onatunji writes this blog post from Nigeria. He can be reached via alex.onatunji@ifsa.net; alexonatunji@gmail.com and +2348102394713. \n[1] https://ifsa.net/the-africa-we-desire-for-forestry-students/ \n[2] https://ifsa.net/forestry-is-not-very-glamorous-in-some-african-countries-an-interview-with-samuel-oluwafemi-ayanleye/ \n[3] https://ifsa.net/ifsa-iufro-africa-book-project/ \n

SUMMARY:International Day of Biodiversity: our solutions are in Nature - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Since its creation\, in 1993\, the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) aims to raise awareness for the importance of Biological Diversity\, who doesn’t only cover plant and animal species diversity but also genetic differences within the species as well as the ecosystems that host this species and their complex interactions. \nThis year’s theme is Our Solutions are in Nature\, which can be understood in two senses\, the first one being that we should follow nature’s example of exploiting a resource without threatening it’s sustainability. The second one is that we should take nature’s example of establishing complex interactions within various levels\, emphasizing the need for solidarity and cooperation. \nIn this webinar\, Luísa Falcão\, from GYBN Brazil\, and Diego Alonso Portugal del Pino\, from the IUCN CEM\, will discuss the role of youth leaders\, the scientific community and of those influencing public policies on the battle for a diverse and sustainable future. \nThe event will be live-streamed on the IFSA Facebook page. \nFollow the Facebook event of the IFSA IDB webinar for updates.
