DESCRIPTION:Since its creation\, in 1993\, the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) aims to raise awareness for the importance of Biological Diversity\, who doesn’t only cover plant and animal species diversity but also genetic differences within the species as well as the ecosystems that host this species and their complex interactions. \nThis year’s theme is Our Solutions are in Nature\, which can be understood in two senses\, the first one being that we should follow nature’s example of exploiting a resource without threatening it’s sustainability. The second one is that we should take nature’s example of establishing complex interactions within various levels\, emphasizing the need for solidarity and cooperation. \nIn this webinar\, Luísa Falcão\, from GYBN Brazil\, and Diego Alonso Portugal del Pino\, from the IUCN CEM\, will discuss the role of youth leaders\, the scientific community and of those influencing public policies on the battle for a diverse and sustainable future. \nThe event will be live-streamed on the IFSA Facebook page. \nFollow the Facebook event of the IFSA IDB webinar for updates.

DESCRIPTION:Forests and the European Commission: Introduction into FLEGT-VPA and ‘Embodied’ Deforestation\nSpeaker: Argyro Zerva; European Commission; Directorate General for Environment; Multilateral Environmental Cooperation\nThe European Commission (EC) continues to develop various instruments that aim to reduce the European Unions (EU) international impact on forest degradation and destruction. In this webinar we want to improve our understanding of two particularly promising instruments and developments. First of all\, we will receive an input on a legally binding trade agreement\, called Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA)\, which allows Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) licenses to be issued. VPA-FLEGT aims to ensure the provision of legally sourced wood from timber-producing countries outside the EU. Why is this specific system believed to deliver positive results? What are the current developments? Can we already see results in countries where VPA-FLEGT is established? \nSecondly\, we focus on the legislative possibilities and current developments within the EU to reduce ‘embodied’ deforestation. This form of deforestation entails the impact of European market demands of products that drive deforestation abroad such as meat\, soy\, cacao or coffee. SUMMARY:IFSS 2019
DESCRIPTION:International Forestry Students’ Symposium 2019\nThe International Forestry Students Symposium (IFSS) is the biggest IFSA event held during the year. In the symposium\, students participate in various forestry activities\, exchange information and share their experiences. During the organization\, general assembly meetings are held\, proposals made through commissions and working groups are discussed at the symposium with representatives of local committees from around 50 countries from all over the world and decisions are taken for IFSA. Subsequently\, all IFSA positions for the following year are submitted for voting. During the symposium\, students are visiting forests\, natural and national parks\, factories\, institutes. \n  \nThe 47th IFSS was hosted by Estonia this year. Main theme for this event was ‘’From Seed To Product’’. During the 2-week program by the Estonian University of Life Sciences; a lot of events have been organized such as city ​​tours and cultural presentations\, international night and activities such as workshops with participants for new ideas as a teamwork. There were presentations about forestry in Estonia\, visits to State Forest Enterprises\, Lahemaa National Park\, Sagadi Forest Museum\, Mining Museum\, Raitwood Factory\, Laaska Hybrid Aspens and plantation forestry\, factories such as Kodumaja\, Osula Graanul & Toftan and the other forestry places. \n  \nThe host country of the 2020 IFSS meeting will be Canada (Quebec). \n
