SUMMARY:alpas - Forestry Beyond Borders
DESCRIPTION:alpas – Forestry Beyond Borders\nOver the Horizon and Beyond the Borders.\nTogether\, let’s break free and explore the boundless opportunities in the world of Forestry!\n\nThe Association of Filipino Forestry Students-UPLB invites you to the very first IFSA Awareness Webinar with the theme “ALPAS: Forestry Beyond Borders”\, happening this April 29\, Thursday at 3:00 PM via Zoom. It is an interactive webinar which talks about the different opportunities that the International Forestry Students Association (IFSA) has to offer. It aims to connect forestry students all over the Philippines\, build new relations\, and discover forestry opportunities beyond borders.\n\nOur notable speakers are Cecil Konijnendijk Van-den Bosch\, Marsia Belikova\, Luisa Gragnaniello\, and Jan Joseph Dida!\n\nCecil Konijnendijk\, a Dutch national\, is the former IFSA President from 1993 to 1995. His research and activities on development\, education\, advisory\, and dissemination focuses on the important role of woodland\, trees\, and other green space in urban settings and societies. A true leader ready to share his goals\, inspirations\, and experiences in IFSA.\n\nAs the current IFSA Forestry Education Sub-commission Head\, Marsia Belikova from Greece is more than willing to share the different educational and scholarship opportunities in IFSA. SUMMARY:Forests in Women's Hand (FiWH) Conference
DESCRIPTION:At the international Forests in Women’s Hands conference from 12 – 13 April 2021\, connecting women in forestry will be a central theme. Participants will meet members of existing women’s networks and have the opportunity to exchange best practice examples and discuss relevant activities and initiatives. Additionally\, the conference will increase the visibility of women and their achievements in the forest sector. \nForest owners\, practitioners\, decision makers\, and academics will address questions such as: Why and for whom is gender equality important? What enables or prevents gender equality from being achieved in society and organizations? What determines if interventions contribute to achieving goals? \nThe conference is supported by the Austrian Ministry of Agriculture\, Regions and Tourism\, coordinated by the Austrian Research Centre for Forests (BFW) and sees as organising partners the Austrian Women in Forestry Association (Forstfrauen)\, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) and the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA). Due to the currently still critical situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic\, the conference Forests in Women’s Hands will be held online. \n\nRegistration is required: https://www.forstfrauen.at/en/component/rsform/form/7-anmeldung-zur-forstfrauen-konferenz-2021?Itemid=243 \n\nDiscover more about IFSA involvement at the conferences

SUMMARY:Those Who Have Come Before Us - Episode 2
DESCRIPTION:Leading up to the Forests in Women’s Hands online conference (12-13 April 2021)\, IFSA has developed a webinar series on gender & forestry with the support of the IUFRO TF on Gender Equality. Its aim is to shed light on the topic\, and provide learning opportunities for forestry students to solve today’s challenges surrounding gender in forestry. \nThis second episode wants to offer the perspectives of women who have already established their careers in the forestry field as a source of inspiration for future generations of foresters. The personal experiences and points of view of the women who have preceded us will offer the opportunity to understand how gender has played a role throughout their careers and to reflect on present times. This will stimulate a conversation with youth in forestry who are about to start their careers. In addition to generating understanding and mutual support\, young foresters are invited to put these stories in relation to their own experience\, which can help to understand how to best approach the challenges surrounding gender. \nSpeakers: \n\nPurabi Bose (India)\nKalpana Giri (Nepal)\nEva Müller (Germany)\n\n  \nLearn more about IFSA @ FiWH

SUMMARY:Nigerian Forestry Students & Graduates Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:According to FAO\, a changing society changes its demands on forests. Although global interests in forest are translated into international forest or environmental issues (treaties on biodiversity\, certification of forest management or products\, etc.) changes of demands at the national level are different.  \nForestry education in different countries is undergoing changes according to the national settings. While in some countries the number of students is growing or at least stable\, in others the number of students is declining. As a consequence\, funding for forestry education might decline and forestry education institutes are at risk in some countries. \nJoin us on the Forestry Roundtable for the Month of February as we host Alex Onatunji\, the IFSA coordinator\, Joint IUFRO-IFSA Task Force on Forest Education and a ERASMUS MEDFOR Scholar. Alex will be helping us understand the CURRENT STATE OF FORSTRY EDUCATION IN AFRICA: A YOUTH PERSPECTIVE. \nAdditionally\, Alex will be sharing his story on how he got into forestry and the opportunities forestry students and graduates in Africa can maximize. \nYou can join the session via zoom using this link: https://zoom.us/j/91319001154 or using ID: 91319001154.

SUMMARY:Forest policy in Europe: Are things getting done?
DESCRIPTION:How are new insights in forestry implemented into practice?\nHow can forest and agricultural policies be intertwined in a future-proof way?\nIs the Common Agricultural Policy in line with the European Green Deal?\nHow can forest policy tackle climate change?\nHow can a bottom-up approach in policy implementation be useful to manage complex phenomena like land abandonment?\n\nThese questions and many more can arise when thinking about forest policy in Europe. Policies are powerful and necessary tools that guide decisions to achieve common goals like sustainable and resilient forests. However\, to achieve these goals\, they have to be well-designed. \nDuring this webinar in English\, 3 keynote speakers will help us to understand the jungle of current and future European forest policies. \nZoom meeting\nID: 996 2982 2945\nPassword: 843279\nNo registration needed \nProgramme: \n\nShort introduction by IFSA LC’s\n‘Nature forest and agricultural policies intertwined’ by Prof. Myriam Dumortier (UGent)\n‘Climate change governance: forest and nature conservation’ by Dr. Jelena Nedeljkovic (University of Belgrade)\n‘Land abandonment and spontaneous reforestation: policies and people’ by Theresa Frei (European Forest Institute)\nPanel discussion: shoot your questions!

SUMMARY:Who Owns Our Forests? - Public\, Private and Communal Ownership
DESCRIPTION:We will be discusing one of the primary factors regarding the use of forest resources – the ownership of our forests. \nThe FAO definition of forest ownership implies exclusive legal rights over the forest resource\, including the right to fully control and utilize the forests. However\, it is necessary to consider that some of the services provided by forests are public goods and that the property rights are restricted by legal regulations and social customs associated with the forest land in question. To understand the rationality behind the management of our forests we have to understand who owns them. In that way\, it is also possible to shape our forests by shaping who owns them. \nOur speakers will be:\n– Marcus Colchester (TFD)\n– Chandra Silori (RECOFTC)

Also go into the importance of the presence of primary/non-productive forests in tropical regions and the sustainable management of natural tropical forests.\nListen to our speakers’ opinion if dedicating forests only to environmental conservation may provide better ecological returns than integrated forests when considering challenges such as lower economical returns\, adaptation of cultural practices\, backlash from the industry etc…\nDiscuss strategies for the integration of biodiversity conservation values in timber production forests and go into the ecological importance of primary forests\, opposed to those focused on timber production. Also discuss policy development for the maintenance of non productive forests. \nSpeakers:\n– Andreas Schuck and Jakob Derks from the European Forest Institute\n– Ulrich Mergner from Bayerische Staatsforsten\n– Adriana Vidal from the IUCN

SUMMARY:Agroforestry and the Green Architecture of the New CAP
DESCRIPTION:Dear All\,\nWe are glad to invite you to the pre-event towards the 5th European Agroforestry Conference\, Agroforestry and the Green Architecture of the New cap. The three-day event will be held on the 16th\, 17th and 18th of November 2020 and hosted in the framework of the yearly initiative dedicated to the “Inauguration of the Forestry Year of Sardinia” promoted by an institutional partnership formed of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia\, local Universities\, local agencies and Chamber of Commerce. \nThe new CAP is entering trialogue discussions between the Commission\, European Parliament and the Council of Agricultural Ministers. Agroforestry is mentioned in several places in the draft Strategic Plan Regulation\, and in the Farm to Fork Strategy and Biodiversity Strategies\, which are all part of the European Green deal.\nIts considerable potential is stressed\, but so too are the administrative and knowledge barriers.\nThis workshop focuses on overcoming these barriers. \nWhat lessons can be learnt from previous agroforestry policies? What policy instruments should be proposed in the new CAP? What is the role of research and extension?\nHow can Member States use the new policies to encourage agroforestry in ways specific to their needs? Are there opportunities for carbon farming funds outside the CAP? \nDownload the Programm Agroforestry and the Green Architecture of the new CAP! \nINFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT\nThe event is free and the official language is English. During the event simultaneous translation will be provided in Italian and English. \nYou can attend the event via Zoom Webinar through the following link or follow the live web streaming here:\nFACEBOOK\n www.facebook.com/Uninuoro2016\n www.facebook.com/Euraf2020\nWEBSITES\n www.uninuoro.it\n www.euraf2020.eu
