SUMMARY:Who Owns Our Forests? - Public\, Private and Communal Ownership
DESCRIPTION:We will be discusing one of the primary factors regarding the use of forest resources – the ownership of our forests. \nThe FAO definition of forest ownership implies exclusive legal rights over the forest resource\, including the right to fully control and utilize the forests. However\, it is necessary to consider that some of the services provided by forests are public goods and that the property rights are restricted by legal regulations and social customs associated with the forest land in question. To understand the rationality behind the management of our forests we have to understand who owns them. In that way\, it is also possible to shape our forests by shaping who owns them. \nOur speakers will be:\n– Marcus Colchester (TFD)\n– Chandra Silori (RECOFTC)

SUMMARY:Webinar - Forestry and Agriculture - Better Together?
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we want to discuss Agroforestry as a tool for Sustainable Development\, Food Security\, and Ecological Restoration/Preservation. \nTherefore we have invited Joana Amaral Paulo from ISA/CEF and EURAF who will discuss modern and traditional agroforestry systems and practices in view of agroforestry systems as a means of reducing rural poverty and avoiding rural exodus as well diversity of the outputs of production as a way of economics and food security. \nSecond speaker\, Meine van Noordwijk from IUFRO will discuss the integration of trees on agricultural land and pasture (agroforest and silvopasture) and talk about the potential of agroforestry on the restoration of degraded landscapes and as a provider of ecosystem services. \nFurthermore\, Thuan Sarzynski (Supagro Montpellier and Youth in Landscapes Initiave) and Laura Deal (TRANS SUSTAIN) will join the webinar and join the speakers on discussing this thematic.

SUMMARY:Forest Optimization: Separate Conservation and Production Forests vs Integrated Forests
DESCRIPTION:In this Webinar we aim to discuss the role of planted forests on reducing the pressure over primary forests in the Tropics\, as a provider of non-wood forest products and of ecosystem services. Also go into the importance of the presence of primary/non-productive forests in tropical regions and the sustainable management of natural tropical forests.\nListen to our speakers’ opinion if dedicating forests only to environmental conservation may provide better ecological returns than integrated forests when considering challenges such as lower economical returns\, adaptation of cultural practices\, backlash from the industry etc…\nDiscuss strategies for the integration of biodiversity conservation values in timber production forests and go into the ecological importance of primary forests\, opposed to those focused on timber production. Also discuss policy development for the maintenance of non productive forests. \nSpeakers:\n– Andreas Schuck and Jakob Derks from the European Forest Institute\n– Ulrich Mergner from Bayerische Staatsforsten\n– Adriana Vidal from the IUCN
