DESCRIPTION:According to FAO\, a changing society changes its demands on forests. Although global interests in forest are translated into international forest or environmental issues (treaties on biodiversity\, certification of forest management or products\, etc.) changes of demands at the national level are different.  \nForestry education in different countries is undergoing changes according to the national settings. While in some countries the number of students is growing or at least stable\, in others the number of students is declining. As a consequence\, funding for forestry education might decline and forestry education institutes are at risk in some countries. \nJoin us on the Forestry Roundtable for the Month of February as we host Alex Onatunji\, the IFSA coordinator\, Joint IUFRO-IFSA Task Force on Forest Education and a ERASMUS MEDFOR Scholar. SUMMARY:Nigerian Forestry Students and graduates Roundtable session #3
DESCRIPTION:Learning is beyond geographical location and forestry students do have an opportunity to study abroad in order to get quality education\, experience culture and work in a new environment and international exposure. One of the easiest ways to do this is through a scholarship abroad route. \n“Scholarship programme for MSc and Phd students from developing countries. A forestry and natural resources targeted scholarship programme can be established under UNESCO or World Bank Scholarships Program.” was one of the recommendations by Monica Gabay and Mika Rekola (2019) in a background study prepared for the fourteenth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests [See here – https://ifsa.net/forest-education-needed-in-all-schools/] \nAs the scholarship application season draws close for the year 2021\, many forestry students and graduates in Nigeria and beyond are not aware of scholarships opportunities they can tap into. SUMMARY:Nigeria Forestry Students and Graduates Roundtable Session
DESCRIPTION:More than a decade ago\, a forestry student from Nigeria decided to email the IFSA secretariat in Germany. He wanted to find out how his University (Federal University of Technology Akure\, Nigeria) can become a member of the International Forestry Students Association (IFSA). This singular act of courage and good spirit brought IFSA to Nigeria and one of the foremost countries to join from Africa[1]. \nHe did not stop only at his University becoming a member of IFSA\, but  was instrumental in the organisation of the first Northern Africa Regional Meeting in April 2009 in Nigeria. He faithfully and dutifully served IFSA in the following capacities. \n\nThe Sub-region Western Africa Representative in 2008 – 2009;\nLiaison Officer to CFA (Commonwealth Forestry Association) in 2009 – 2010; and\nHead of Sub-Commission UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) in 2010 – 2011.\n\nThe man is none other than  Dr. Julius Adewopo\, a Postdoctoral Fellow and Geospatial Analyst at International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA). \nLeaders are born and leaders are made\, he did not stop serving students in 2011. A ready example is Samuel Oluwafemi Ayanleye\, a Masters of Wood Science candidate and a MasterCard Foundation Scholar at University of British Columbia (UBC Canada). He attested that Dr. Julius Adewopo was one of the individuals that provided the much needed mentorship when he so perturbed about getting admission to study a “strange course of study’’ – Forestry back in 2012[2]. \nDr. Julius Adewopo is very concerned about the future of the Forestry profession in Nigeria and the world at large as well as the organizer of the Nigeria Forestry Students and Graduates Roundtable Session – Meshach Aderele and Olaoluwa Israel Adetula. He has agreed to speak to Forestry Students in Nigeria once more via Zoom by this weekend on Saturday 6 June 2020 by 1pm GMT+1. \nAlex Bimbo Onatunji\, Coordinator\, IUFRO-IFSA Joint Taskforce on Forest Education and the lead researcher in the Young Africa Forestry Professionals Publication Project[3] would also be making a presentation about the project too.
