Forestry students of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the University of Chile are organizing the 50th anniversary of the International Forestry Student Symposium (IFSS) of the International Forestry Student Association (IFSA) which will be held between the 25th of August and the 8th of September 2022, the slogan of this event is “Chile: Country full of contrasts” trying to show the importance of contrasts in environmental, cultural-social and economic practices around the world through the example of a mega diverse country.
This annual event brings together students and young professionals related with forestry and environmental topics from all over the world to discuss about the biggest challenges this sector is facing, in this case it will be sustainable development in a climate crisis scenario, this symposium will try and generate a common global perspective towards the years to come and what will be IFSA`s message in the different processes the organization has influence as a non-profit NGO of students related to the forestry field.
IFSS 2022 will be 15 days long and it is divided into 2 different stages: During the first 4 days the 100 participants will be participating in a congress that will take place in the Chilean capital city, Santiago, having different workshops, talks, forums and networking, this stage will be open for general public with previews inscription. During the the rest of the event IFSA members will start a tour that goes from the region of Valparaiso to Los Lagos region, through this 11 day tour participants will be able to discuss and experience the most characteristic sceneries and industries Chile has to offer always bringing this to a global perspective taking advantage of the variety of cultures present.
Chile has a unique biodiversity, a broad richness of ancestral knowledge and at the same time has been able to develop a strong forest industry during the last 40 years. This situation unherantly generates multiple contrasts that translate into challenges and opportunities which will be touched from a collective, interdisciplinary and integrative perspective during the whole event so this examples can be extrapolated to global topics such as governance, climate change, land use change, local community relations, innovation and sustainable production of timber and non timber forest products.
