Winners of the International Day of Forests poster contest by IFSA announced!
By Juliet Achieng and Angela Gabriela Veneros (ITTO sub-commission)
International Day of Forests (IDF) is a day set by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each IDF, countries are encouraged to engage in local, national, and international efforts by organising activities involving forests and trees, in line with the IDF theme. In 2022, the theme is “Forests and sustainable production and consumption.” To commemorate the day, IFSA organised a poster contest in a bid to engage the Local Committees (LCs) in the event. The topic of the poster was “Forest and sustainable production and consumption in your country”. The competition was open until 14 March 2022 to individual IFSA members or Local Committee team members (up to 4 people). Six finalists were selected from the 20 posters that were received.
The finalists gave a presentation during a webinar organised by IFSA on 19th March from 3PM Central European Time (CET). After the keynote by Dr. James Chamberlain, Coordinator of the IUFRO Task Force “Unlocking the Bioeconomy and Non-Timber Forest Products” the finalists were given 1-3 minutes to explain the rationale behind their posters. The judges were drawn from IFSA’s partners: Ewa Makandi from Global Landscape Forum and Jose Bolanos from European Forest Institute/Forest Europe while Simone Massaro represented IFSA.
