Georg-Ludwig-Hartig Award

On July 18th, 2022, IFSA received the Sustainability Award from the Georg-Ludwig-Hartig Foundation at the INTERFORST exhibition in Munich, Germany. The foundation was established in 1987 in honor of the German forest scientist Georg Ludwig Hartig (1764-1837). During his career, about 200 years ago, he established several forestry schools for Germans but also for international students and was one of the first personalities who realized the importance of sustainable forest management in Germany to preserve the continued existence of forests and the production of wood as a scarce resource.

„Unter allen Bemühungen des Forstwirths ist wohl keine wichtiger und verdienstlicher, als die Nachzucht des Holzes, oder die Erziehung junger Wälder, weil dadurch die jährliche Holzabgabe wieder ersezt, und dem Wald eine ewige Dauer verschaft werden muß.“

Among all the efforts of the forester, none is probably more important and more meritorious than the breeding of the wood, or the education of young forests, because by this means the annual extraction of wood must be replaced again, and the forest must be given a perpetuity.”

Georg Ludwig Hartig (1791)

IFSA thanks the Foundation for this honor and hopes to continue to maintain Georg Ludwig Hartig’s idea of sustainability in the future.
