Shaping Youth Perspective: IFSA Indonesia Restoration Tour to
APRIL-Restorasi Ekosistem Riau

I. Summary of the event
This event was a collaboration programme between IFSA and Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings Limited Group (APRIL Group)–Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER), held on 27 October–3 November 2024 in APRIL Group, RER, Riau, Sumatra, Indonesia. There were 10 IFSA students from LC Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), LC IPB University and LC Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS) and also two students from Universitas Riau and Universitas Lancang Kuning engaged in this collaborative programme as delegates. This
programme aimed the delegates to:
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of APRIL Vision 2030 to see APRIL sustainability initiatives on peatland ecosystem management, their ecological importance, and best practices for restoration and conservation.
- Acquire practical skills in greenhouse gas emissions monitoring, understand themethodologies used, and recognise the importance of peatlands in carbon storage and climate change mitigation in APRIL–RER operation area.
- Study community partnership models and how local engagement contributes to the success and sustainability of restoration projects within RER.
- Conduct a joint-project between IFSA LC in Indonesia to increase public awareness and support for peatland restoration through social media publications, video releases, and webinars, highlighting the importance of RER’s work and participants’ learning experiences. This programme was initiated by IFSA delegates at The Forests Dialogue on Ecosystem Restoration at East Kalimantan, 22–26 April 2024, which were Mr. Rizka Afif and Ms. Canakya Galerita.

This program was held on 27 October–3 November with details as follows:
Day 1 – Sunday, 27 October 2024
- Welcome Dinner & Introduction with IFSA & Riau Students
The welcome dinner session served as APRIL–RER’s reception for IFSA Indonesia. It also included two presentations: the first from APRIL, detailing its commitments and initiatives toward APRIL Vision 2030; the second from RER, outlining the vision, mission, and objectives as part of APRIL Group’s sustainability commitment; and a networking session at the end of the session to foster
connections between IFSA Indonesia and APRIL.From this session, IFSA delegates learned about APRIL Vision 2030 and the implementation of the strategy towards the sustainability goals, including the establishment of RER in 2013. It has been a decade, and RER has restored and protected the peat forest at Semenanjung Kampar and Padang Island. At the end of the day, IFSA students could get to know each other and get closer from this dinner, also with Riau Students (Universitas Riau and Universitas Lancang Kuning) as well as the APRIL–RER staff.
