We will be discusing one of the primary factors regarding the use of forest resources – the ownership of our forests.

The FAO definition of forest ownership implies exclusive legal rights over the forest resource, including the right to fully control and utilize the forests. However, it is necessary to consider that some of the services provided by forests are public goods and that the property rights are restricted by legal regulations and social customs associated with the forest land in question. To understand the rationality behind the management of our forests we have to understand who owns them. In that way, it is also possible to shape our forests by shaping who owns them.

Our speakers will be:
– Marcus Colchester (TFD)
– Chandra Silori (RECOFTC)
