My IFSA Experience

Northern European Regional Meeting, Estonia, 2024

The 2024 Northern European Regional meeting (NERM) took place in Estonia from the 23rd-29th of April. It was wonderfully organised by the amazing Organising committee (OC), from the Estonian University of Life Sciences, who created an opportunity for IFSA members from Northern Europe (although we happily had a few guests from Southern Europe!) to enjoy an invaluable shared experience within the beauty of Estonia and its forests. IFSA’S mission is to connect, empower, and educate the next generation of forestry students and personally for me, this experience has done just that.

This trip has been one of the most precious experiences of my life. In such a short space of time I have met some of the most beautiful people who I’ve had the pleasure to gain knowledge from and experience an opportunity of a lifetime with. As someone who is not experienced in travelling, I found that in less than 24 hours, not only did I feel reassured and safe, but I felt like I was part of a little family.

On our 3rd day, we visited Järvselja, Tartu, an old wetland with planted forests that has been used by forest scientists for conducting thousands of experiments with tree planting as well as having pockets of ancient forests. We were given a tutorial on how to plant seedlings using planting tubes and planted a forest.

Whilst in Järvselja, we also went on a bog hike where we were given an overview on the management and preservation of Estonia’s biodiversity and forests. These activities allowed time to enjoy the forests and to share our knowledge on topics such as bark beetle, fungi etc.

Another highlight was the international night where everyone showcased some of the culture of their country. It consisted of lots of dancing both throughout the presentations and afterwards during the party. Everyone’s personalities and efforts created a wonderfully happy environment throughout the night. I felt included in everyone’s culture and had so much fun doing so.

None of this would’ve been possible without the generosity, kindness, and hard work of the Estonian OC who never failed to impress with their organization and preparation throughout the entire trip.

Overall, participating in NERM 2024 Estonia has encouraged and inspired me in my own education. I’ve learnt so much from many interesting people. It is a brilliant opportunity to express yourself and create lifelong friendships. The atmosphere that every individual brought to the trip was so lovely and special, there wasn’t a moment that left us without a smile on our faces throughout this unforgettable experience.
