IFSA Spring Course 2024

One of the outputs of the 2012 United Nations General Assembly was proclaiming 21 March as the International Day of Forest with the aim of a reflection day of how important is the forest. Every year, the theme of the celebration day is chosen by the partnership of forest, and the 2024 theme is “Forest and Innovation”.  IFSA as one of the biggest forestry students in the world are happily joining the effort on raising the awareness of forest importance. This year, we would like to celebrate the event by having a dedicated week to learn the contrast that happens in the field of implementing the innovation we have. IFSA is inviting experts to every session that will share their expertise, and a list of the speakers will be released by the end of February.

Topic: The Future of Forest Labour and The Carbon Neutrality Projection

The debate on whether countries worldwide should attempt to entirely eliminate CO2 emission is still going on, as the consequence of keeping socio-economic stability. The business dynamism effect on firm entry and exit such as the oligopolistic competition and urban employment in the labor market then should be considered if at the same time we want to achieve wage equality. It then bring question as follow to be discussed:

  • What is still missing in the carbon neutrality project?
  • In the market of uncertainties of the smallholders/rural labor market, what mechanism can we frame them in the carbon neutrality projection?
  • To what degree certification can help on the carbon neutrality projection?

Topic: Biotechnology for Forest and Intellectual Properties of IPLCS

Description

Like any other technologies, biotechnologies raise such high expectations and worries. From sustainable forest production to the long term consequences for the forest in the long term. At the same time, many of the progress in biotechnology are coming from asking IPLCs to be then developed and even commercialized, mostly for pharmaceuticals. It then bring question as follow to be discussed:

  • Should we be trying to improve nature?
  • What kind of policies or environmental risk assessment need to be improved?
  • How such an LEK (Intellectual Properties) of IPLCs should be considered by the biotechnologist while doing biodiversity screening?

Topic: Environmental Justice and The Multifaceted of Bioenergy

Description

Bioenergy is a multifaceted term, as it is highly hoped to replace fossil fuel and engage the livelihood of local people. With the projection of carbon neutrality, bioenergy is in the discussion as emission is not expected to be produced here. However, the discussion regarding its ethics on the production, what technology should be used, and from where the fuel of production should be contracted are still few. It then bring question as follow to be discussed:

  • To what degree is the possibility of zero emission can be reached when we want to produce bioenergy on a mass scale?
  • To achieve environmental justice, how far stakeholder participation should be involved in the bioenergy sector?
  • How can we track the supply chain of bioenergy and ensure its sustainability?
  • Is there any possibilities to have an umbrella organization which focuses on the bioenergy supply chain traceability?

Topic: Remote Sensing and Forest Product Traceability

Description

It is a never- ending discussion when it comes to who should be blamed for deforestation. Then we agree to have such clear traceability to know the origin of the forest product. However, the traceability sometimes cannot guarantee the legality of the products. To create such a standard, the world then agrees to have an umbrella assessment on the traceability through certification as the legal proof of how sustainable the forest product being produced. It then bring question as follow to be discussed:

  • How effectively implements traceability or certification, where the most viable approaches are by changing the operation management and logistics that can cost a lot of money for a small company?
  • How far can we rely on remote sensing data? Are there any open sources for individuals or smallholders to check the traceability of forest products?
  • How far the traceability that then legally can be shown through certification, can help minimize the deforestation?
  • How traceability can be aligned with the diverse characteristics of local communities?

Topic: Green Investment for the Intact Forest Landscape

Description

The Intact Forest Landscape (IFL) is a seamless mosaic of forest without any remote sensing detected of human activities. While many of the organizations try to conserve the IFL through a jurisdictional approach, the vital missing point is funding. As a fact, the IFL technically can’t be used for any forest production (no real cash benefit) and with the broad area that sometimes make the local government face difficulties in ensuring there is no such illegal logging. It then bring question as follow to be discussed:

  • How is the economic valuation of the IFL and how is the ethic of trading the carbon sequestered by the IFL to the private companies?
  • Do companies who hold a certification that shows if they implement reduced impact logging should give an access to have plantation in the IFL?
  • What is the best green investment mechanism for the IFL?
  • To what degree the participation of local communities should be considered when it comes to the IFL management?

The course will be held by zoom with a duration of 1,5 hours starting from 12 PM to 13.30 PM UTC+0. Google invitation will be sent by 18 of March 2024 together with email confirmation of the participation. To be part of the course, you need to register here by the 15 of March 2024. Those who participate minimally in 3 sessions, will receive the certificate of appreciation. We have a nomination for the most outstanding participants! Come join us!
