Introduction
WHAT IS LARM?
LARM (Latin American Regional Meeting) is the annual meeting of the local committees that belong to IFSA in South America. The meeting takes place every year in a different country and this year it will be hosted by the LC CFCF UNALM, in Lima, Peru.
Topics regarding forestry and the environment will be looked at in more detail through guided tours, workshops, talks, exhibitions, discussions and integrations, which are all intended to widen forestry students’ knowledge and skills.
WHICH PLACES WILL WE VISIT?
As the organising committee (OC), we want you to enjoy the best of Peru, that is why we want you to get to know different ecosystems such as:
Lucumo hills – Lima, Peru:
The Lucumo hills or “Lomas de Lúcumo” are exceptional ecological zones that emerge as islands in the middle of the immense sandy areas that characterise the Peruvian coastline and are home to very special and unique plant formations which, in turn, are home to numerous and varied wildlife, often unique.
YANACHAGA CHEMILLEN – Pasco, Peru:
The Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park (PNYCH) is a protected area within the territory of Peru, part of its biodiversity is in danger of extinction. The park preserves part of the Peruvian yungas and Ucayali cloud forest ecoregions. In 2010, UNESCO recognised Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park as a Core Zone of the Oxapampa-Asháninka-Yánesha Biosphere Reserve.
OXAPAMPA – Pasco, Peru:
It is a city where the mixture of German, Austrian and Peruvian customs and traditions (of the Yánesha, Shipibo and Asháninka ethnic groups) are manifested in gastronomy, dances and parties. In addition, it has great potential for the forestry sector.
PERU: COUNTRY OF FOREST
Perú is the second country with Amazonian forests in the world (after Brazil) and the ninth country on the planet in terms of forest area in general. Likewise, it is the fifth country in the world with the highest percentage of primary forests (4%), in relation to the surface of its national territory (MINAM, 2017).
More than 60% of the national territory is covered with forests. The total extension of our forests, as of 2015, is 69 020 330 ha. We have forests on the coast, highlands and jungle. The largest extension of our forests is found in the Amazon with 53.4%, followed by dry forests with 3.2% and Andean forests with 0.2%.
The main types of forests are the coastal dry forest, western montane forest, cloudy montane forest, inter-Andean forest, premontane forest, lowland forest and high Andean forest, these important for containing a high diversity of flora and fauna.
