FORSAN UDUS LC Report: Embracing forestry education as solution to environmental challenges in Sokoto state, Nigeria

IFSA FORSAN UDUS LC under the leadership of Godslove Abuh paid a visit to Sautul Haqq Secondary School, Sokoto State Nigeria on Friday, 17 November 2023, with the aim of educating the younger generation on the need to protect the environment.

We delivered a lecture in the school which emphasized the need for the public to embrace afforestation and reforestation as a measure to curb some of the deleterious environmental challenges faced in society. We also educated the students on the negative impact of deforestation on society. After the lecture, we donated a number of seedlings to the school to raise around the school premises.

The motivation to carry out this awareness program stems from the various environmental challenges faced in the country (NIGERIA), especially in Sokoto State which is known for several environmental challenges such as flooding, irregularities in rainfall, desertification, etc. Sokoto state is located in a semi-arid zone, and a major characteristic of the semi-arid zone is short vegetation cover, as students of forestry and environment, we see it as part of our responsibilities to contribute towards augmenting the vegetation cover in this region in other to attain a sustainable environment.

The Principal of Sautul Haqq Secondary School expressed his gratitude and appreciation to IFSA for contributing their own quota to the environment and requested that the association should always find time to pay them a visit.
