North Macedonia’s Cultural Day

Република Северна Македонија

On Thursday, 20 July 2023, 8-9.12 PM (UTC+0) The International Forestry Students’ Association of Local Committee Dren hosted the cultural day via Zoom meeting. The presenters were Ivana Peneva (LC Dren President) and Nadica Kremshovska (LC Dren Vice President). The presentation began with the introduction of North Macedonia’s geographic condition. North Macedonia is part of the Southern Europe region and precisely is in the Central Balkan Peninsula. This country is home to a very diverse ethnicity including Macedonians, Albanians, Turks, Bosnians, Serb, Roma, etc. The national language used is the Macedonian language, moreover, North Macedonia’s people can also speak English, deutsch, spanish, italy language, and many others.

The geographic condition of North Macedonia is creating diverse landscapes including mountains, valleys, and fertile plains. This country was once covered with dense forest until during the Roman period, the forest (timber) was exploited to create buildings and ships. This exploitation continued in the next governments that held power which were the Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empire. Here, the value of the forest is still limited in the mass of timber. Until the 20th century, forest management was focused on how to conserve the forest in a very sustainable way to provide ecosystem services and economic sources through responsible logging practices. Despite facing common global issues in the forestry sector like deforestation, wildfires, and illicit activities by people in the forest. The government of North Macedonia has implemented efforts by increasing law enforcement, people empowerment, and restricting regulations.

The presentation continued to five sites that are worth visiting in North Macedonia.  Please check the presentation attached below to learn more about this amazing country and watch the recording below.
